Meet Deirdre Petrie – 2024 National Dog Show Breed Judge

1. What does it mean to be invited to judge at this year’s National Dog Show Presented by Purina?

Being selected to judge this year’s National Dog Show is an incredible honor, and I am deeply grateful to the Kennel Club of Philadelphia for the invitation. This show is truly one of the highlights of the year, attracting exhibitors from across the country to compete. It is a privilege to be entrusted with the task of judging some of the very best dogs the show world has to offer.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the breeders, whose dedication to producing healthy, well-bred dogs that conform to Breed Standards is evident in every entry. To the exhibitors, thank you for your confidence in me to judge your beautiful dogs.

Of course, I would be remiss not to thank the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and its members for their unwavering hard work, dedication, and hospitality. This was truly a stellar event!

2. Can you share your thoughts on your various Breed Assignments?

My assignment this weekend primarily focused on judging the Toy breeds on both Saturday and Sunday, along with a parent club-supported entry of Xolos on Sunday, followed by judging the Hound Group.

Saturday’s entries where quite large in a number of breeds. Smooth Coat Chihuahuas (8), Long Coat Chihuahua (18), Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (31), Chinese Cresteds (19), Affenpinschers (4), Brussels Griffons (7), Biewer Terriers (10), and Pomeranians (17).

The entries were of exceptional quality, particularly among the Biewer Terriers, Cavaliers, Chinese Cresteds, and Pomeranians. The lovely entry made it a challenge to make my final selections, as many dogs were truly deserving of the win. It was a pleasure to evaluate such high-caliber dogs. I was also thrilled to see my Brussels Griffon Breed winner go on to place in the Toy Group later that day.

3. Now that it’s nearly over, what are your thoughts on the 2024 year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?

Personally, this has been an exciting year for me as a judge, as I have had the privilege of consistently judging throughout the year. I am incredibly honored to be invited to judge so many shows across this country—it is a privilege I do not take lightly.

To the preservation breeders, I say, “Job well done.” In today’s world, with the costs associated with maintaining a number of dogs in order to have a breeding program, it takes true dedication and commitment to continue this important work. Your efforts are appreciated and essential to the future of our breeds.

I’ve also seen a growing number of newcomers this past year, and I believe it’s important for all of us to reach out and guide these individuals as they begin their journey into the world of purebred dogs. Let’s help to place well-bred, quality dogs with these newcomers, so they are inspired and encouraged, not discouraged. It’s vital that we support them so that they remain part of our sport.

Looking ahead to 2025, I am excited for the privilege of traveling this country, judging beautiful dogs, and continuing to contribute to the sport we all love. I wish everyone a successful year ahead.
